One of the great things about the Fourth here is the plethora of ‘carry-in’ dinners that go along with it. I’m always searching for my whitest tea-towel to cover bread or cookies when I take this basket.  Here I stamped a flour-sack (about $1.29 at the farm supply store - available at discount and warehouse stores, too) with Eddie and some stars from Supah Star. I used  very light dye-based ink. Then I had my mom (because I’m no good with a needle!) embroider my simplistic design.  America the Beautiful would also coordinate wonderfully with Eddie, if you wanted to do something similar!

Speaking of ‘carry in’, I know that folks call it different things in different areas of the country. In Georgia, it was often called ‘dinner on the grounds’ at our church. What do you call these social get-togethers that involve good home cookin’?

We usually call them “potlucks” when we are talking about places like Church or when it is at one of our family memebers homes we just so “going to supper”. One time we were visiting my dh’s family and his Aunt said “I am going to FIX for you”… I said “oh thanks” and had to find out later that she was cooking supper for us! LOL…but that was not a bring a dish kinda thing! Oh and I am from the south too.

Where I live…we call “carry ins” a potluck.

Potluck or Covered Dish here in TX (you should know that)! Great idea to embroider this towel — looks so pretty in your Longaberger Bread basket! ;) Bet’cha didn’t know I knew that much about baskets, did you?!! ;)

Lori, I really like your flour sack towel idea. I have an old SU set [retired] that I might try this with. I always keep a few sack towels in the linen closet to cover bread or dinner rolls with. We also call them “potlucks” or “bring a dish to pass suppers”. My husband can carve beautiful watermellon baskets and melon laterns and we often bring fresh fruit baskets or salads to these. I also like to make Greek olive dinner rolls that would look great in a basket along with one of these towels. Thanks for the idea!

Hi Lori, This is a great idea. I grew up in Tennessee and we also called it dinner on the ground. I live in Utah now and we have potluck lunches at work all of the time so I will try your idea for our lunch in July.
    Thanks for sharing.

Potluck her in NC—I’ve never heard it called “carry in”—-When I saw the title, and the picture,I thought you meant something to do with “take out” food–which really makes no sense, but it’s early and well, there ya have it…..Great idea!

We say either pot luck or covered dish.
