I owe a sweet family a thank you for something very nice that they have done for me lately. This little giraffe and butterfly are from Kim’s new Baby Love set. CHF is hosting a Kim Hughes Blitz thru Sunday, and this card fits the Limited Supplies challenge (cardstock, stamps, ribbon & buttons only).

Yesterday, I received my complimentary copies of Paper Crafting with Kids from Paper Crafts. I had 2 projects published in this issue. The idea was to find projects appropriate for children to make or give as gifts. Lots of fun ideas to share paper crafting with your kids!

This little set of colored pencils was one of my projects. I made a simple box with Cryogen White cardstock and the Geometric Flowers II Backgrounder from CHF. Wouldn’t it be sweet with some simple line art stamped notecards? What’s your favorite thing to give a child for a simple birthday or thinking of you gift? Leave me a comment with your answer, and on Sunday, I’ll pick a winner and mail out one of my extra copies.  Have a great day!

All 3 of my kids love to create art, so receiving something as simple as a new sketch book and drawing pencils are a big hit at our house. There’s nothing better than “fresh” paper and pencils. ;)
    Thanks for the chance!

  2. Trish D Says:

Congrats on being published yet again! :) Our kiddos (and consequently their friends) are still pretty young, so anything involving play dough is always a hit. I love finding seasonal cookie cutters to package up - usually in a cellophane bag with a header!

  3. Mary Lou Says:

I love to read so I love books. I always love to give books, especially neat books to children. I always write a special sentiment inside. I still have many of my favorite childhood books that MY children now enjoy. It is a gift that “keeps on giving”. Your project is absolutely adorable. Congratulations!

  4. StampinCathy Says:

Congrats on be published! I usually give books, and sometimes stamp images and put crayons with it. When really busy…it’s MONEY…how can you go wrong there!
    Thanks for a chance.

  5. Amy L. Weber Says:

Lately I’ve been making and giving out home-made swirly crayons that are made from old bits and pieces of used crayons and melted in tins or molds in the oven (for just-because gifts). I also love to give great children’s literature (I’m a reading teacher).

  6. Christyne Says:

For a younger child, I like colouring crayons and a colouring book. For an older child, it’s usually a gift card. And for the child who is spoiled and already has WAY TOO MUCH, I give a book that they can snuggle up and read with mom or dad.

  7. Glorie Says:

Congratulations on being published. Books are always a good bet for children, and anything fun like toys, crayons, etc.

  8. Bev Says:

When my children were quite young and invited to a friend’s party, we would make a tape of stories, jokes and songs. We heard years later that, at least in one family, this was a cherished gift that was kept for many years. If I was doing this now, a decorated CD case would go along with the CD.

  9. Amy Says:

What a fun-looking special issue! I haven’t seen this in any local stores yet; I’ll have to keep my eye out. Congrats on the publication and thanks for sharing!

  10. Amy Says:

Oops. I hit send too soon. I love giving kids books. Here is one of my new favorites:

    http://www.amazon.com/Built-Car-Chris-Van-Dusen/dp/0142408255

If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen. The artwork is phenomenal. The text is so witty and doesn’t talk down at all (great vocab in here!).

  11. MaryBeth Says:

I try to always give a book or gift card to Barnes & Noble along with something else and always a homemade card.
Congrats on being published….kudos to you!!!!!

  12. Marsha Says:

I like to find coloring books and crayons that match in a theme that the child likes, such as Sponge Bob or Cars or Princesses. Sometimes I can even find them at the dollar store !

I like to make art kits for kids. Save a sturdy box and decorate it. I fill it with different types of paper in white and a good assortment of different colors. Crayons, colored pencils, paints, markers, stickers, fancy-edged scissors, glue sticks, a washable ink pad, stamps, and a little notebook and pencil are all things that can be picked up for pennies at back to school time. Load that box up and stand back…let them create. Add a bag of cardboard rolls from papertowels or toilet tissue, an empty egg carton, washed empty milk chug bottles, etc. and they will be busy for hours. This makes a great gift or item to keep in the closet for when kids visit and it cost only a few dollars. I love to give books and movies also.

Congratulations on being published in the magazine!

It depends on the child. Sometimes it is colored pencils and a notepad, sometimes it’s a boo or a small toy.

  15. Joyce Harms Says:

I like to roll up a coloring book and put a rubber band around it; I take a strip of cardstock that I have stamped or a piece of patterned paper and tape it around the middle over the rubber band.
After attaching a strip of double stick tape to the middle of that paper strip, I stick crayons or colored pencils around the tape. By tying a ribbon around the crayons, it secures them even more. Make a cute paper tag to attach to the ribbon.
Thanks for the chance to win! Joyce

  16. Edna Siu Says:

what I would give to a kid will always be a set of art stuff, such as sketch book, crayons or watercolor, depends on her/his age. And a book about drawing, printing or “How to …” craft book.

I buy stamping magazines for myself…
    Thanks for the give away.

    Edna

  17. Maria H. Says:

Lori: Cute pencil project! Congrats on the magazine attention! My son loves to craft, so colors, paper and stickers are my choice! Have a great day!

  18. Jean McBride Says:

I must confess that my favorite thing to give kids (or adults or that matter) is candy. It’s always fun and easy to make special packaging that will suit almost any occasion, but probably the real reason that I enjoy giving candy is because I like it so much. Congratulations on being published again - always so proud of you!

  19. waterpixie Says:

Right now it’s bookmarks. When I saw Owen’s Kinder class light up at the site of some bookmarks I made, I figured “why not”. Although they are just beginning to read, something about a personalized bookmark makes it more fun. I’ll be making about 40 bookmarks in the next week as I prepare for end of the year parties for both my boys.

  20. Andrea Leigh Says:

I have started trying to give gifts of time. For close friends or family - a sleepover night and a movie :) FUN for us all and they don’t get an extra gift that gets thrown in the corner of their room.

  21. Lori Says:

I love to give kids craft kits and or supplies!

Thanks for a chance at this!

    Lori

  22. Melissa (SCS: stampin_melissa) Says:

Honestly, my favorite gift to children are books! For my DS (almost 5 y/o) I enjoy getting him those colorless markers with a coloring book (you know, those markers that only work on their “special” paper?) So no accidental coloring on any other surface. There are also these thin books that have a plastic coating and you use dry erase markers on them and they can erase and rewrite on the pages. Really Great for traveling! I usually keep some of these on hand for surprise gifts when we have a long trip ahead of us. :)

  23. janet d. Says:

I make a nice card (ALWAYS)! Lately, we’ve been giving Webkins to the 2nd grade class, some Webkins to the 5th grade class, or if MY kids decide their friends have too much, we’ll go with a ten dollar bill. Not homemade at all but always VERY APPRECIATED!

  24. Regina Cornelius Says:

congrats on being published!!! i would love to get my hands on that magazine!

i would have to say my favorite thing to give to little ones is crayons and coloring books. every gift i give to a kid includes this or something very similar, dependig on what age.

  25. Suzanne Says:

Congrats on being published……I can’t wait to get a copy, and start trying things with my kids.

Hands down the best gifts for kids are books, artsupplies and gift cards they can use with their family, like mini- golf, batting cage, tea parties, etc.

    thanks for the opportunity!

  26. Janet Sisk Says:

I know that this may seem like an impersonal gift, but I usually give the child a gift card to Target, Toys-R-Us, Wal-Mart or other similar store. Kids nowadays actually like to shop for their own gifts. Plus, no need to return anything. All my nieces and nephews live out of state so it is really handy for me. Thanks for the chance to win.

  27. Kim Leach Says:

Love the card!! Giraffes are a family favorite and there’s been so many images lately!!

My favorite gift to give is a “spy kit” using a simple plastic “school” box with a handle and adding cool looking sunglasses, magnifying glass, small steno book, pencil, a washable ink pad and index cards (for fingerprinting of course!) disguises {mustache–sometimes the groucho marx glasses come attached:), hat, clown makeup, etc} and a wallet badge I make using black CS…Prism would give it the perfect leather feel, wouldn’t it?… I use the computer to print their name and official-looking graphics; I cover it all with some contact paper (to make it flexible and easy to “flip” open…”Detective Leach here. I just have a few questions…” The badge takes the longest but it’s worth it!

My son is 22 and STILL has his wallet badge and glasses (with airplane propellers…great disguise!) He used that thing to death!!!

    What a great question!!
    Kim Marie

  28. Emily D Says:

I like to give a gift to the older siblings when a new baby is born in their family, something like a DVD or a coloring book, so they feel important and have something fun to do while mom and dad are busy with the new baby!

  29. Mary (Happy Now) Says:

Congratulations on getting published — What a cute project! My son is still a little young, but that sounds like a FUN magazine (that I didn’t even know about until now)! And I am loving all of the other gift ideas… Thanks, ladies!

Not really a simple gift idea, but my FAVORITE gift for kids is an “All About Me” ABC book. For my son (and my nephew), I collected pictures of each of them, stickers, embellishments, etc. for all the ABCs and “scrapbooked” them into a collage album for Christmas. My son LOVES to look at the album — (perhaps as much as I enjoyed creating it)? :) Mine was a full 8 1/2 x 11 album with two pages for almost every letter, but this could be simplified and downsized a ton to make it quicker and easier…

  30. Jennifer Bradley Says:

Books are great b/c you can sign them and leave a special message and when they read the inside cover they will think of you or the event in which the book was given!

  31. Sandra Smart Says:

My favorite thing to do is and altered jar filled with candy and a matching card. I know it is nothing original, but what child does not like candy? ;)

  32. Patty E. Says:

I like to buy books for kids! They’re educational and I try to pick books that I think they will like, so it’s also a little personal.

  33. Melanie PL Says:

For a young child, I give them a gift certificate to a restaurant– like Friendly’s– in the amount to match their age and decorate a gift card to go with it. Kids love it! You can also decorate a new paint can with paper and put cute things in it the child would enjoy: candies, movie tickets, costume jewelry, 2 tickets to the zoo… the list is endless!

  34. Shawn K. Says:

Congrats on your latest publication! You rock!

Depending on the child and the age, I’ve got a couple of stand-bys. Art supplies, books, and gift certificates for older kids.

    Shawn K.

  35. Swedie Says:

I love to give kids crafts or kits that they can make or do something with. I love to encourage developing imagination and creativity.

    Swedie

  36. Pat Says:

I love to put together some sort of art kit that is age appropriate for a child’s birthday gift. I think all children should have the “tools” to be creative. Congrats on your publication and thanks for sharing!

    Pat

  37. Erin K Says:

My favorite is art supplies too. I really like the washable crayons. I have my boys make a card for the person and then the crayons. I should consider buying 8 packs in bulk. But really, what kid doesn’t love fresh crayons, even if they already have some? :)

  38. Rose Ann Says:

Congratulations, Lori!!!! Your card is just adorable, you Rock Star!!! :D

  39. Jeni Says:

    Wow Lori!! Way to go!
I love to give simple chapter books or some type of art supply. I think if you can excite their imagination at a young age then they will become brilliant adults.

  40. Stephanie Eisele Says:

Kids love to eat and buy stuff. Kids in my famuly get gift cards for McDonalds, wal-mart, or Itunes.

  41. Angela Lemmons Says:

Well, my 7-year-old daughter’s favorite book right now is “Chewy, Gooey, Rumble, Plop! A deliciously disgusting plop-up guide to the digestive system” so we’ve given that book a few times! Last summer, I made a lot of flip flops with pieces of fabric tied around the top - those were a hit!
