Bookmark & The Shack

Lynn Mercurio posted a cool little project challenge this morning at Splitcoast.  It was to use the given pattern to create a bookmark. Since my friend, MaryBeth asked to borrow a book over the weekend, I thought this was so timely. Seems she’s going to be taking a car trip to Florida (that is a long, long way from Missouri!), and she wants to borrow the book, The Shack,by Wm. P. Young.

Have you read The Shack? If you have read this amazing book, I’d love to know what you thought of it. If you haven’t, I highly encourage as a good read. It’s engaging fiction that I couldn’t put it down with a lot of thought provoking issues. You can pick it up at any discount store with a book section (i.e. Wal-Mart).

I layered my bookmark with a flat strip on the bottom so that I could stamp there. I didn’t use any embellishments because they could indent or warp the pages of a book if too much pressure was applied to the book when using the bookmark. It’s a little plain jane, but it’s functional and I know my friend will get a little kick out of the message as she tries to read, all the while her precious, beautiful children bouncing around in the back seat of the minivan…..”ARE WE THERE YET?”

Here’s one of my favorite tricks with Ranger Distress Inks. Occasionally, I like to mix and match papers from various manufacturers, in this case the Happy Camper from Cosmo Cricket with the graph paper from October Afternoon. What generally happens is that the papers often have a different value of white or ivory to them. I use a light colored Distress Ink from Ranger with Cut N Dry foam and give both sheets a little edge work. Now instead of the graph paper being too white for the Happy Camper, they compliment each other very well. The Happy Camper had more of a yellow tone to it when I started, but I still distress both pieces to even them out when they are side by side.

  • Stamps: Butterfly – Baby Love by Kim Hughes (Cornish Heritage Farms) & ‘there yet’ (High Hopes Rubber Stamps)
  • Cardstock: Happy Camper (Cosmo Cricket) & graph paper – Detours collection (October Afternoon)
  • Ink: Espresso Adirondack & Scattered Straw Distress (Ranger
  • Accs: Copic Marker (R39), Cut & Dry Foam (Ranger) & Scalloped Rectangle Nestabilities (Spellbinders) for scalloped edge on the bottom

  1. What an awesome bookmark. Love these papers together and your distressing gives it the perfect look! Thanks for playing along today! :)

  2. Love the extra tip of distressing inks to make the papers match – thanks!
And, the bookmark is great too

  3. Hi Lori!

Such a cute travelling theme bookmark!

I read The Shack this summer. I loved parts of it, it really challenged me, parts of it I’m still mulling over. We’re having a discussion of it at church on Wednesday. One of our church members is a Theology prof at our Seminary, so they’re going to look at it and from a story and Theological perspective. Neat hey?

Anyway, just wanted to pop by and say hi. Lovely creations as always :)

  6. Hi Lori, just a line to say I love the bookmark. So very cute and it will be kind to the book also. Yes, I read The Shack, and enjoyed it very much. It really makes you think and several parts of it made me smile and gave me comfort. It is a story that I will think about for a long time and one that I will reread. Take care.

  7. Just read that book last week and I loved it. It was really so good.
Wasn’t this bookmark fun to do? Yours is really cute.
    Have a great day Lori!

  8. very cute bookmark! :)
I read the book and really enjoyed it! while it may not be completely ‘biblical’, I do remember that it is a book of fiction, and it both challenged me and brought me comfort. I had checked it out from the library and then went out and bought a copy once I finished. I’ve asked my hubby, who is a pastor, to read it. He mentioned it to the other pastors on the retreat he attended last week, and almost all who had read it enjoyed it as well.

  9. Neat bookmark and thanks for the tip! :-)

  10. What a clever idea. These would make great teacher gifts or classroom gifts. TFS

  11. This is adorable! I think I need to make one! And keep hearing about this book…I may need to check it out.

  12. Read The Shack and it was wonderful. Thought provoking, comforting…a “can’t put down” book. Someone lent me the book at work but after I read it I went out and bought my own copy. I intend to read it again. A “must read” book.
